NBA - Prove Them Wrong - Allen Iverson Canvas Art by IKONICK
Allen Iverson's impact on the sport of basketball is undeniable. His technical skill made him one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history, but it is his unapologetic authenticity that makes him iconic.
To rise from humble beginnings in Hampton, Virginia to represent the United States in the 2004 Summer Olympics takes dedication, vision, and an obsessive desire to be the best. To do so in the face of all the obstacles he faced demands a strength of character that only Allen Iverson possesses.
There were a lot of factors going against him on his way to the top, and he proved them all wrong.
Take his early years as an example. During high school, an unfortunate incident threatened to end Iverson’s sports career before it even started. He went from having his pick of schools to having all his offers taken away from him. Most people might think that would demand a career change.
Iverson proved that wrong.
His mother encouraged him to let go of his football ambitions and pursue basketball, and even convinced Georgetown University coach John Thompson to take her son for the Hoyas. Standing at only six feet tall, Iverson was much smaller than the dominating stature of the Big East players at the time. But once again, the skillful point guard proved the doubters wrong, setting the school record for career scoring average and winning Big East Defensive Player of the Year each year he played. After only two years he had proved himself ready for the NBA.
Drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers’ first overall pick of the 1996 NBA draft, Iverson exploded onto the court, racking up record-setting points and winning Rookie of the Year. His creative play style and true-to-himself personality quickly attracted the eyes of fans and critics alike. During a time when players carefully crafted their public images to avoid scrutiny, Iverson played, dressed, talked, and acted just like himself.
Love him or hate him, he was a spectacle on the court.
Among nationwide media pressure to conform to a certain behavior, Iverson proved the stigmas wrong. He showed athletes everywhere that it was okay—even admirable—to be true to themselves.
He didn't care what the critics had to say. He inspired viewers and fans everywhere not just because of his competitive mindset, but because he had the confidence to play the way he wanted to play, even in the face of people who didn't like it. Everytime he was the target of doubt or criticism, he would do what he does best: Play dominating basketball and prove them wrong.
"Prove them Wrong" from the officially licensed NBA Legends canvas art collection is a tribute to the most authentic athletes to ever step onto the court. Hang this Allen Iverson canvas art on your wall and remember to be yourself in everything you do. You might be judged for it. You might hear criticism. Don't listen to them. Prove them wrong.
